All about wool is a special topic for ABC because our specialty is the washing and repair of fine wool fibers.  We are listed as a Certified Wool Care Specialist by The Wools of New Zealand, an international company that provides a commercial range of branding, technology, and design services to the carpet and rug industry for both producers and users of their product.

Wool is an amazing fiber.  Not only are the finest woven rugs in the world made from wool, but it is a perfect fiber choice for other home furnishings and clothing as well.  It is soft, comfortable, and totally sustainable.

Because of the wide variety of man-made fibers available in today's market and because wool can be a much more expensive option (especially in carpet and rug fiber), the consumer may avoid wool, never realizing the vast number of benefits offered by this super fiber.

WOOL IS NON-ALLERGENIC 

Contrary to popular opinion, wool fiber is actually good for asthma sufferers.  The reason for this is wool carpets and rugs are especially resistant to dust mites and their waste products, the main allergic triggers for asthma attacks.

WOOL IS ANTI-STATIC and CONTROLS INDOOR HUMIDITY

Wool can retain up to 30% of its weight in water and still feel dry!  It is this ability to absorb moisture from the air that allows wool to control indoor humidity levels while making it anti-static, reducing the risk of static shocks.

TRUTH #1 - Wool Carpets are Perfect if You Suffer from Allergies or Asthma

The most common single cause of asthma is sensitization to house dust, or more precisely to the dust mite, and particularly its waste products.  But there's no reason why asthmatics shouldn't enjoy the comfort and aesthetic pleasure of wool carpet.

In fact, not only are carpets in general inhospitable for dust mites, but wool carpet is especially resistant.  Research performed by the German Applied and Experimental Allergy Research Association (GAF) showed that when wool and nylon carpets were compared for dust mite populations, the wool carpet performed best in resisting dust mite infestation. 

Wool's long, coarse fibers cannot be inhaled and therefore do not affect asthma sufferers.  As long as the air is dry, the ventilation good, and the cleaning regular and thorough, asthma sufferers can breathe easy with wool carpet!

Did you know that choosing wool carpet or a wool area rug for your home is both good news...and sometime bad?  

The Good News...

The good news is that carpet and rugs made of wool, a high quality fiber, will last longer, look better, and retain their value longer; even though wool may initially be the more expensive option.

Choosing Wool-The Baaaad News!

Wool fiber, because of its physical makeup, has the characteristic of hiding dirt.  The bad news about choosing wool means you won't see as much dirt on the fiber, and so you may not vacuum or clean often enough.  This means your wool carpet or rug may prematurely wear out.
