WE SELL RUGS ON CONSIGNMENT!

We sell rugs on consignment. That's what we state on our website, in our newsletters, in our office, and on a huge banner above our garage door.

What started out as simply a means for moving out area rugs that had never been retrieved by their owners has turned into a win-win proposition for our customers and their friends, as well as for ABC.

What Types of Rugs Can Be Repaired?
In April of 2013, we made the decision to have a sale of all of our 'orphaned rugs.' We spent several weeks making a final effort to contact their owners. We then priced all the rugs reasonably (to recover cleaning fees), and sent emails to our customers to let them know we were having a rug sale.

The response was incredible. The sale started at 10am, and by 9am there was a line at the door all the way out into the driveway! By Noon, all the rugs had been purchased.

Shortly after our big sale, continuing feedback from our customers proved that finding good, clean area rugs at reasonable prices could fill an important need for customers in our community. 

Many began asking it we were going to have another sale, especially customers who had missed the sale because they had not yet given us their email addresses.

Unfortunately, we had sold all those orphaned rugs and we had also changed our procedures for contacting customers who don't pick up their rugs in a timely manner. 

Fortunately, our staff saw an opportunity to help our customers in the future by providing a safe place for them to buy and sell rugs at a reasonable price, while also giving us the opportunity to clean and/or repair those rugs as per the seller or buyer. 

We put the word out to our community about our ability to sell rugs on consignment and a new arm of our business started growing.

Today, customers bring rugs to us to sell on consignment. They consider it a big advantage because it allows them to put their unwanted rugs up for sale, have them displayed and promoted, and not have to encourage strangers to come to their home.

Do You Have A Rug You Would Like To Sell?
If you are considering selling a rug or rugs on consignment, here is how it works:

• Bring us your unwanted rug or rugs. We may be able to pick them up for you at no charge if necessary, but they must be rolled and ready.
• Your rug must be cleaned before we will hang it. If you would like any repairs done, we can do that also.
• We will apply a moth retardant to your rug after cleaning and/or repair at no extra charge.
• You choose the amount of the sale price. We will be happy to give you guidance for this.
• Any and all negotiations will take place between you and the potential buyer.
• ABC will take a percentage of the sales price (see our Consignment Policy below).
• We reserve the right to decline any rug offered for sale on consignment. We will not sell certain types of rugs with a backing, known as tufted rugs.

AREA & ORIENTAL RUG CLEANING
at ABC

Area Rug Cleaning

Rug cleaning in our plant at ABC is carried out with procedures that incorporate specialized hand dusting, washing, rinsing, and wringing, utilizing equipment specifically designed for your area rugs, whether handmade or machine-made.

During the washing process we can treat your rugs for any number of problems such as insects, urine, dye runs, and spot removal, etc. All solutions used are non-toxic and bio-degradable.

All rugs are thoroughly rinsed with gallons of fresh, cold water to remove any and all residues from the cleaning and any treatments used. 
After rinsing, the rugs are put through our automated wringer, where they are rinsed again and most of the water is extracted.

After the wringer, the rugs are hung and thoroughly dried in our temperature-controlled dry room.

Before, during, and after the cleaning process, your rugs are continually inspected to ensure the end result meets our standards.

Oriental & Specialty Area Rug Cleaning

An oriental rug is a rug which has been hand woven, usually with a pile that has been hand knotted, and is constructed of natural fibers. Please note: Some hand woven rugs may not have a pile at all, such as kilims and other flatwoven rugs.

An understanding and respect for the weavers and their methods of rug construction and the environment in which these rugs were woven allows ABC to be at the top of a unique list of quality professional firms offering oriental rug washing.

Specialty rugs can include hand-made rugs, as well as some high-end machine-made rugs such as Karastans, Starks, Edwards, Fields, and Custom-Bordered rugs, etc.

Both oriental and specialty rugs are true works of art and our procedures for cleaning them include precautionary measures that take into account the complexity of the construction of these rugs. 

Variables such as fiber types, rug construction, knotting techniques, dye systems, geographic regions, and cultures all have an impact on the proper care and cleaning of these rugs.

CAUTION: Oriental Rug Washing Should Never Be Done In Your Home!

Washing a rug properly requires careful inspection, dusting, possible treatments, cleaning of both front and back, as well as thorough drying, which is best accomplished through hanging in a controlled drying room. These procedures cannot be accomplished successfully in your home or place of business.

AREA & ORIENTAL RUG REPAIR
at ABC

Area Rug Repair

We offer an extensive area rug repair service on our premises. When your rug, whether hand or machine-made, arrives at our plant, a portion of our pre-inspection procedure includes suggestions of any repairs that could be done to enhance the beauty and value of your rug. These are suggestions only, based on our understanding of the fiber and construction of each individual rug and are offered as an optional service.

All work is done by trained technicians on our premises. Each rug will be individually assessed and will be priced according to the amount of time and materials involved.

Occasionally, a customer may wish to just have repairs done on a particular rug or rugs. We would be happy to oblige, but for the health and safety of our staff, we require all rugs to be cleaned in our plant before any repairs can begin. Besides exposing our technicians to possible bacteria, rugs often become compacted with dust and dirt particles that can make them extremely difficult to work on.

Any repair we suggest on a handmade rug will be as true to the weaver's original design as we can while retaining as much of the rug's value as possible following the repair. Repairs to a machine-made rugs can significantly enhance the beauty and usability of that rug.

What Types of Rugs Can Be Repaired?

Although we specialize in oriental rug repair, our work is not limited specifically to handmade oriental rugs but to any number of area rugs, handmade as well as machine-made, including but not limited to:

• Navajo Rugs
• Zapotec Rugs
• Hooked Rugs
• Belgian Wool Rugs
• Dhurries
• Karastan Rugs
• Courestan Rugs
• Custom Rugs
• Braids.

Types of Repairs Available

End Work including:

• Hand Overcast-The rug is unraveled to the last undamaged row of pile. An interior hand stitch is inserted, locking into the foundation to secure the weft line (left to right) to create an even fringe not foreign to the rug.

• Hand Fringe Reinsertion-Warps (top to bottom) are re-inserted into the foundation to replicate the original fringe.

• Hand-Sewing of a Pre-Woven Fringe-To stop any further unraveling and to make the rug look presentable, a pre-woven fringe can be hand-sewn onto the end of either or both ends of the rug. This fringe can be easily removed, allowing the rug to be restored in the future if desired.

Side Work including:

• Hand and Machine Serging-A hand-sewn stitch can be applied, which binds the edges (sides) of the rug, protecting it from unraveling. NOTE: A machine stitch is intended for temporary use only and is not recommended for hand-made rugs.

• Cloth Binding-This is a procedure generally used for cut area rugs. A cloth binding is machine-sewn on to prevent fraying of the rug.

Holes/Tears repair includes:

• Patch-A hole can be patched with another oriental or area rug with a similar design but will almost certainly not be an exact match. 

• Hand Re-weaving-This is a labor-intensive type of repair utilizing similar wool, silk, and cotton as originally used in a particular rug.

Miscellaneous repairs include:

• Cutting Rug to Size
• Decorative Chain/Cashmere Stitch
• De-Curling of Edges on Rug
• Dye Removal~~Heat-seaming of a Rug
• Leatherette Stripping Application to Edge
• Reversing Scrim on Hooked Rug
• Specialty Fringe Work
• Spot Dyeing
• Tack-Out (Squaring) of a Rug or Tapestry
• Tea-Washing of Fringe
• Velcro Application for Hanging Rug or Tapestry
